Our Farm

Monarch Coffee is located on the cool slopes of Hualālai, in the Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii. This famous, 20-mile stretch of land is the only place in the United States where authentic, gourmet 100% Kona coffee is grown and cultivated.

We love our rural community of Holualoa, a slow-paced town that has maintained all the richness of Old Hawaii, and we are blessed with a beautiful climate. The tropical morning sun shines brightly on our farm, yet the afternoon cloud cover provides cool, misty shade and the perfect conditions for our coffee to flourish in nutrient-rich volcanic soil.

So, what does our specific location mean for your morning cup of coffee? Differentiating between “Hawaiian” coffee and “100% Kona” coffee isn’t always easy at first glance, but take a sip of the real deal and you’ll quickly understand why 100% Kona coffee is famous across the world! The delicate but flavorful taste and rich aroma will set it apart from the crowd.

In addition to being situated in the only region of Hawaii that produces 100% Kona coffee, Monarch Coffee has the ideal growing conditions and unique farm-to-cup coffee processing that yields a delicious cup of coffee, with flavor to be enjoyed and savored every time.

When we started Monarch Coffee, we knew from the get-go that we wanted to establish responsible coffee farming practices and we could be proud of

For us, responsible farming practices are evident when we are committed to working with the land, managing the natural resources it provides, and doing everything we can to keep this ecosystem healthy and happy. The methods we use include:

  • Cover crops planted around our hillsides help to prevent erosion and naturally break down the tough volcanic rock in the soil.

  • Avocados, citrus, banana, papaya, and strawberry guava trees all help to create a well-rounded environment. They bring biodiversity among the coffee trees and also attract bees—happy bees are a sign of a healthy farm and we have 28 busy hives!

  • We work hard to manage our water usage. Most of our crops are watered primarily by natural rainfall—letting nature take the lead. Occassionally when

  • We use our coffee pulp for compost, which eventually makes its way back out to the coffee trees in our compost mix so that no part of the coffee goes to waste.

  • All of our coffee is hand-picked—no machinery involved!

When we first started farming coffee here, we discovered that the area is home to Monarch butterflies—and that’s how we landed on our name! Since then, we have developed outcroppings of milkweed to attract more Monarchs, as well as native mamaki to attract Kamehameha butterflies.

Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability comes from a marriage of modern sensibilities and ancient tradition. Thanks to modern environmental practices, we know how toxic irresponsible farming practices can be for the ecosystem and anyone consuming crops grown with them. But taking care of the land you work on isn’t a new idea—it’s a concept that is deeply embedded in Hawaiian culture. It is our aim to be good stewards of our piece of the Island—and to give back as much as we take.
